Free Foods

Free Foods A free food is any food or drink that contains less than 20 calories per serving. People with diabetes are advised to eat as much as they want of the free foods that have no serving size specified; but only two or three servings per day of those foods that have a specific serving size. It is suggested that the serving be spread throughout the day.

Drinks Bouillon, low-sodium bouillon or broth without fat
Carbonated drinks, sugar-free
Carbonated water
Club soda
1 Tbs. Cocoa powder, unsweetened
Coffee/tea
Drink mix, sugar-free
Tonic water, sugar-free

Fruit 1/2c Cranberries, unsweetened
1/2c Rhubarb, unsweetened

Vegetables Vegetables (raw) 1 cup
Cabbage, celery, Chinese cabbage, cucumbers, green onions, hot peppers, mushrooms, radishes, zucchini

Salad Greens Endive, escarole, all lettuce, romaine, spinach

Sweet Substitutes Sugar-free candy, gelatin, gum
Sugar-substitutes (saccharine, htmlartame, acesufame-K), Sugar-free jam/jelly (2 Tsp.), pancake syrup, (1-2 Tbs.); Sugar-free whipped topping (2 Tbs.)

Condiments 1 Tbs. catsup, horseradish, mustard, pickles (dill, unsweetened), 2 Tbs. salad dressings, (low-calorie),
1 Tbs. taco sauce, vinegar

Seasonings Basil (fresh), celery seeds, chili powder, chives,
cinnamon, curry, dill flavoring extracts (almond, butter, lemon, peppermint, vanilla, walnut), garlic, garlic powder, herbs, hot pepper sauce, lemon, lemon juice, lemon, pepper, lime, lime juice, mint, onion powder, oregano, paprika, pepper, pimento, soy sauce, soy sauce, low sodium, spices, 2 oz cooking wine, Worcestershire Sauce
