Walking Techniques (Page 1 of 3)
Regular Walking Techniques
- As you get underway, aim first to achieve a regular breathing pattern.
- Bend your arms to 90 degrees to shorten their action and increase stride rate.
- Swing your arms in natural opposition to your feet. The forward arc should equal the backward arc.
- Lead with your chest, chin parallel to ground, eyes down and scanning rather than ahead.
- Don’t swivel your hips and don’t over-stride. Increase stride frequency, not length.
- Extra-long steps overwork the calf muscles and could lead to your knees locking.
- Land on your heel, flex toes up, roll over the ball to push off.
- You should feel as if you are working shin, calf and gluteals (buttock muscles).
